As more restaurants continue to pop up in Waikiki, choosing where to dine can become a difficult task. Things, however, are heating up at TR Fire Grill, located off Kuhio Avenue, making the decision for your next meal an easy one.

The restaurant opened in December 2016 and is the perfect spot to stop in the next time you’re in Waikiki. “The ‘TR’ in TR Fire Grill stands for Tony Roma, which is the parent company of this new concept — but that’s where the similarities end,” explains PR and marketing director Mona Wood-Sword. “You won’t find one barbecue rib on our menu.”

Instead, Wood-Sword says, TR Fire Grill focuses on new American fare featuring locally sourced produce and fire-grilled entrees cooked to perfection over hickory wood. The restaurant also works with Hawaii’s local farms — including Aloun Farms, Ho Farms, Kunia Country Farms and more.

Under the direction of chef Richard Miller, the menu boasts popular dishes like Bacon Wrapped Smoked Meatloaf ($20), which is prepared with leek and onion gravy, and is served with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

“This dish is hearty, delicious and generous enough to share,” says Wood-Sword.

Another favorite is Salmon & Zoodles ($32). “The ‘pasta’ is actually made with zucchini, mixed with asparagus, Sweety Drop miniature peppers, green apples and feta cheese,” she explains. “The salmon is topped with a pistachio romesco sauce, which is kind of like Italian pesto.”

The best part about TR Fire Grill is that although it is known for its elevated American comfort foods, it also serves local favorites such as Oxtail Soup — and all at reasonable prices. There’s also an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet everyday from 6 to 11 a.m. for $19. Additionally, “Local Hour,” also known as happy hour, is everyday from 2 to 7 p.m. and highlights drink and pupu specials.
