Typically made up of a meat entree, two scoops of rice and macaroni salad, plate lunches are especially unique to Hawaii’s culture.
Make a visit to Kahai Street Kitchen and you’ll be in for a plate lunch like no other, as the takeout restaurant is known for whipping up the best local-style dishes. Located on Coolidge Street in Moiliili, Kahai Street Kitchen boasts a variety of daily specials.
One special that keeps customers coming back for more is Charbroiled Hamachi. For $12.95, patrons can enjoy rustic hamachi served with a soy-citrus sauce and garnished with red onion namasu (Japanese vegetables). It’s all dusted with togarashi (Japanese peppers).
“The customers love it because the hamachi is fresh,” says head chef David Yamamoto.

The newest addition to Kahai Street Kitchen’s menu is Da Monster Taco Salad ($10.25). This Goliath of a meal is made up of shredded crispy lettuce, seasoned ground beef, toasted fresh corn, olives, tomatoes, shredded cheese and fresh jalapenos. These yummy flavors come in a crispy flour-tortilla shell topped with guacamole, creme fraiche and salsa.
