Minamoto Kitchoan serves up hand-crafted wagashi — sweets that feature flavors and cultural accents within edible sculptures — and it’s not surprising to see them displayed and served out of the shop’s glass showcases worthy of fine jewelry.

In addition to offering delicious Japanese-style treats, the dessert destination strives to share its confectionery works of art and culture with customers from around the globe and kamaaina alike. To coincide with the third anniversary of its flagship location near Center Stage at Ala Moana Center, Minamoto Kitchoan is offering specially priced selections to thank its loyal and first-time customers.

Guests can pick up a limited-edition Anniversary Special Assortment Bag (100 available on a first-come, first-served basis from October 21 to 23) for $35, a savings of 25 percent off the regular price. The special assortment includes Taiyonomi (mango jelly/gelatin), Mochi four-piece box (with white peach mochi and matcha mochi), Hakuto Jelly (white peach jelly/gelatin), Fukuwatashi Senbei three-piece combination (matcha, vanilla and chocolate), Hakuto (white peach) Sherbet, Muscat (green grape) Sherbet, and two pieces of Rusk (crispy toasted Japanese-style sponge cake).

New assortments of Rainbow Waffle cookie sandwiches with lightly sweetened cream filling also are available and are 20 percent off during the anniversary celebration Oct. 21-23. Flavors include vanilla, green tea, chocolate, strawberry, blueberry, lemon and mango, and the sweet treats are regularly priced at $25 for a seven-piece box and $45 for 14 pieces.

Manager Yayoi Akana notes that from Oct. 21 to 23, customers may learn about Japanese culture and have stickers and other items printed with kanji (with corresponding purchase), as experts from Japan will be on hand to add to the festivities.

“Once you taste what we have to offer, you’ll notice the difference right away,” Akana says. “It’s like jewelry: you take the time to enjoy the colors, textures and beauty of each item.”

Customers also can visit Minamoto Kitchoan’s new kiosk within Kahala Mall. Akana reminds readers that the aforementioned anniversary specials are available at the Ala Moana location only.
