If you find yourself strolling through the streets of Kaimuki and discover Hung Won Seafood Restaurant, make a stop for some old-school Chinese food.
Hung Won has stood the test of restaurant-time, as it has been in the same spot for decades. But with bright tablecloths and decorative fans adorning the walls, the space feels fresh, open and new.
In 2014, the restaurant landed in the hands of a new co-owner and general manager, Kevin Li. Under his guidance, the restaurant spruced up its interior and recently expanded its menu — there now are more than 200 items ready to order.
The large menu is partly credited to the restaurant’s regulars. Many customers request a different dish or modify an existing one, which ends up on the menu, manager Janice Onyang explains. Although some customer favorites such as Honey Walnut Shrimp with Mayonnaise, Beef Tender-loin with Black Pepper Sauce and Hong Kong Style Roast Duck are dishes that will never go out of style.
