You might know Asian Mix for its Taiwanese-inspired milk teas and bubble drinks, or for its blend of Japanese, Chinese and local-style cuisines. Whatever the reason, one thing is certain: the Beretania Street restaurant offers the perfect combination of quality fare and affordable prices.
The simple and clean setup — located under Safeway — dons a quaint outdoor-eating area and an “Asian Mix: Tea Time” station inside. The eatery’s boba, which are tapioca balls that come in the milk teas and bubble drinks, are cooked and then soaked in brown sugar and honey for an extra-sweet treat. Coffee jelly also is a favorite addition, as are the countless flavors to choose from, including honey lemon tea and matcha red bean green tea.
What really makes Asian Mix unique, however, is its off-the-menu food items. For instance, one dish that strictly remains a word-of-mouth gem is Tofu Home-style ($9.50). Cubes of soft tofu are fried to a brown crisp and then cooked with ground pork, chili pepper and green onion in a thick, spicy sauce — but not too spicy.
Additionally, Asian Mix provides catering services for any occasion.
TRY THIS DELICACY
Asian mix has plenty of popular off-the-menu items, including Scrambled Egg Sauce and Shrimp Fried Rice ($10.50). The dish actually is considered a fine-dining dish in Hong Kong and features white rice topped with a delicately soft mixture of concentrated chicken broth and egg with cooked shrimp. Each bite is flavorful and elegant in texture, making it clear as to why the dish is highly revered.
