TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS WEEK’S HOUSE SPECIAL: BARBECUE BABY BACK RIBS ($12 REGULAR, $8 MINI)

It’s almost impossible to not notice Kau Kau Grill, the food truck with a very loyal following. After all, notes of endearment from patrons adorn the truck as proof that this is a happening eatery on wheels.

Founded by partners Miles Oyasato and Ty Takishita, Kau Kau Grill joined the food truck craze last April and ever since has been garnering recognition for serving up some of the best kanak attack plate lunches around!

And since the attitude among this food truck’s customers seems to be “the messier, the better!” new patrons need not be afraid of getting their hands dirty and diving right into dry-rubbed, individually cut morsels of hearty barbecue baby back ribs. Indeed, throw away the fork and knife because the meat literally falls off the bone and melts in your mouth. Yes, the ribs are that good.

“The concept of our food truck is based on food that we like to eat,” says Miles Oyasato, who runs Kau Kau Grill with business partner Ty Takishita.

This best-selling plate lunch is made complete thanks to a choice of salad or potato mac salad with spaghetti noodles.

The irresistible baby back ribs are the stars of this dish, but what’s a plate of barbecue ribs without the rice? A choice of white or brown rice accompanies the meal, or opt for Krazy Rice, composed of white rice infused with onions, shredded barbecue rib meat, hot sauce, homemade barbecue sauce, seasoned salt and pepper. Add $1 extra per scoop of Krazy Rice.

Let’s get saucy! Seriously, ribs are nothing without a good sauce and Kau Kau Grill has mastered the recipe, creating a homemade barbecue sauce that’s zesty, tangy, sweet and savory. It’s so good, no wonder the recipe is kept under wraps.

Currently, the food truck is located at the corner of Kapiolani Boulevard and Kaheka Street. Follow Kau Kau Grill on Instagram (@kaukaugrill) and Facebook to keep up-to-date with the latest happenings or location changes.
