Getting Your Fix of the “Mix”

There is a very good reason why Hawaii’s food enthusiasts are flocking to Asian Mix — the food is delicious and affordable. It’s also convenient, has plenty of parking and because it is located under the Beretania Safeway, you won’t get wet exiting your vehicle if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Asian Mix is named as so because the menu combines Chinese, Japanese and local flavors and dining styles that really create something for everyone. This includes plate lunch-style meals, bentos and single entree options that range from vegetarian- to carnivore-friendly. You can guess which direction Surf and Turf is going to take.

Seafood lovers will appreciate the Salmon Bento ($7.50), a refreshing way to introduce yourself to the menu. A 5-ounce piece of Chilean salmon is served with a side of white rice, Japanese pickles and vegetables. Asian Mix’s bentos have proven to be popular with customers, and each one is tasty and satisfying without being too heavy.

For the poultry lover, Pot Roast Chicken ($9.50) is a juicy and tummy-busting must. Half of a chicken is braised in chicken stock and Chinese five spice, then deep-fried until crispy and topped with oyster sauce, carrots, broccoli and button and straw mushrooms. The chicken is wonderfully moist and the oyster sauce nicely complements both the chicken and the accompanying veggies.

One final option to discuss is the Pork Chop with Salt and Pepper ($8.95). This is an incredibly savory dish. Thin, moist pieces of pork are battered and deep fried, then finished in a wok with red pepper, garlic, salt, chilies, green onions and wine. It’s great either as finger food or in combination with any number of other dishes — one of which is chosen on a weekly basis to be offered at a reduced price of $6.95.

It’s time to get in the mix.
