Any business with a loyal following is proof that they’re doing something right. So, when Tae Im took over ownership of the longtime local favorite New Eagle Cafe last November, he decided to keep the restaurant’s longtime customers happy by continuing to offer many of the same original menu items.
“About 90 percent of it is the same,” says Im. “And we added a few new items.”
Located in Nimitz Center (1130 N. Nimitz Hwy.) near Best Buy, New Eagle Cafe has been serving a great selection of tasty American and local-style comfort food for more than five decades, such as Miso Butterfish, Hawaiian Chopped Steak, Chicken Katsu, Kalbi, Ahi Belly, Grilled Center Pork Chop, Deep Fried Akule, Oxtail Soup, Loco Moco and Prime Rib, as well as a variety of sandwiches, burgers and salads.
Among the must-try dishes is Braised Short Ribs with Spanish Sauce ($14.50), which is a daily special available Thursdays and Saturdays only. According to Im, it’s extremely popular, very flavorful, and the meat is really tender. It’s served with one scoop of rice and vegetables. Another popular daily special is Roast Chicken with Stuffing and Gravy ($12.95) available Thursdays and Saturdays only. Enjoy half a chicken served with traditional gravy and stuffing, along with one scoop of rice and vegetables.
Also, with any entree or daily special, you have the option of making it a complete meal (add $3.65) with a choice of tossed house salad, soup of the day or miso soup; a choice of hot tea, iced tea or fountain drink; and a choice of pie, ice cream, sherbert or Jell-O.
There also is a breakfast menu available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to noon, and Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to noon, offering fresh made-to-order eggs, omelettes, hot-cakes, waffles and more. If you love pancakes and fruits like I do, then Pancake Fruit Medley ($9.50) is the perfect order, featuring two pancakes topped with a towering mix of strawberries, blueberries and bananas.
Menus can be viewed online at neweaglecafehawaii.com. Lunch and dinner is served from 11 a.m. daily, and takeout is available all day. Im adds that they are expecting to get their liquor license in a few months, but in the meantime customers are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages. The restaurant also is staying open later during the summer, welcoming customers until 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
