Whether you’re on your way to work, a family gathering or a potluck with friends, stop by Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine for its convenient, dim sum to-go option.

Located in Kapolei, the restaurant has been open for about 10 years serving delicious traditional Cantonese-style food. The dim sum counter is available for take-out only and opens early from 6 a.m. (8 a.m. on Sundays). On the menu is a great assortment of the island favorite manapua, including the original Char Siu Manapua ($1.35 steamed, $1.45 baked), as well as Baked Teriyaki Chicken Manapua, Baked Hot Dog Manapua and Baked Ham & Cheese Manapua ($1.45 each).

Of course, there also are some classic dim sum dishes, such as Shrimp Dumpling, Siu Mai and Half Moon with pork, dried shrimp and shiitake mushroom (80 cents each). And for a taste of sweetness, there’s rice cake ($1.10) and Jin Dui with red bean, coconut or pork ($1.10 each). You also can order Char Siu ($8.25/pound), Roast Pork ($8.25/pound) and Roast Duck ($9.95 half/$19.95 whole).

The menu also has some desserts not commonly found at a Chinese restaurant — Custard Pie ($9.95), Pumpkin Pie ($9.95), Coconut Custard Pie ($10.95) and Custard/Pumpkin Pie ($9.95) (all but the custard needs to be pre-ordered one day in advance). Surprisingly, the custard pie was one of the best I’ve ever tasted, and I’ve had many — just the perfect amount of flavor and creamy texture.

The restaurant is known for its dine-in buffet featuring more than 30 different items, including Salt & Pepper Shrimp for lunch and Steamed Snow Crab for dinner. Buffet price for lunch is $9.95 adult, $5.95 child Monday through Friday; $11.95 adult, $6.95 child on Saturday and Sunday; and for dinner $16.95 adult, $7.95 child Monday through Thursday; $18.95 adult, $9.95 child on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Lunch buffet is available from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, and dinner buffet from 5 to 9 p.m. An a la carte menu is available all day as well.

The restaurant also can accommodate private parties for up to 200 people, and allows party hosts to bring in their own drinks, desserts and pupus, as well as entertainment. Takeout or dine-in, you can count on Ho Ho for some good food at good prices and a good time. After all, the name translates to “very good.”
