Hukilau has been a lunch and dinner hot spot for area employees and those passing by since it first opened its doors five years ago. With a central location, good service and a menu filled with favorite comfort food and other fare, it’s no surprise the Executive Center restaurant has been so successful.
Kimchee and Oxtail Fried Rice ($9 at Happy Hour) is a good example of traditional foods done differently. Adaptated from its regular smoked pork fried rice, the new version has a tangy flavor that benefits from the kimchee spice and the richness of the oxtail. Topped with two eggs cooked any style, the rice is moist, well seasoned and BIG.
Ahi and Avocado Poke ($12 during Happy Hour) is another good choice. Creamy avocado is a great complement to the fatty texture of the ahi without either one being overpowered. The Maui onion and shoyu/inamona sauce tie it all together.
Some places may compose songs about their ribs, but Hukilau’s Grilled Babyback Ribs with a chipolte-mango barbecue sauce ($14) is delicious. The ribs are thick, fall-offthe-bone tender and the sauce contains just enough finger-sticking power to signify a good meal.
Want to make a presentation with your order? Try Sizzling 10-ounce New York Steak ($12) with sauteed mushrooms and carmelized onions. The plume of smoke, the loud, crackling sizzle and the accompaning aroma will announce your choice long before it gets to your table. And if you think it looks, smells and sounds good — wait till you taste it.
