Sushi King brings Kimo’s Smoke Wagon back for the holidays, offering Smoked Turkey, Smoked Ham, Smoked Pork, Smoked Ribs and Smoked Prime Rib, all available for pre-order now.
The bright yellow lunch wagon, aka Joe Aloha Catering, will be parked in front of the restaurant (at 2700 S. King St.) on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24) and Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m.
Chef James “Kimo” Akaka has been serving holiday meals for the past decade. A perfect addition to any feast, Akaka says his meats are not too smoky, are evenly cooked and have a lot of flavor.
“I personally like to eat smoked meats,” he said. “It’s a clean way of cooking and it tastes good.”
Akaka, a 1978 graduate of Saint Louis School, previously worked in the kitchens at Spago, Bellagio hotel and Sandy Valley Ranch in Las Vegas. He returned to Hawaii in 2002 and opened his catering company. More recently, he has been providing his popular smoked dishes on a regular basis out of a lunch truck parked at 438 Kamakee St. (near Nordstrom Rack) Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. His mobile smoker is right in front, along with a crowd of loyal customers. On the menu is your choice of Smoked Ribs, Smoked Chicken or Smoked Top Sirloin for $8, or Smoked Roast Pork or Catch of the Day for $9. All plates come with a cup of soup of the day, green salad and rice (brown or white). Smoked meats also are available by the pound.
For the special order holiday meals, available are Smoked Turkey (18 to 20 pounds, $60), Smoked Ham (7 to 8 pounds, TBD), Smoked Pork with see mui chutney (7 to 8 pounds, $45), Smoked Ribs with barbecue sauce (full slab, $28) and Smoked Prime Rib with horseradish cream, barbecue sauce and aujus (5 pounds, $110).
