Saying ‘oui’ to JJ’s Alluring Appetizers

JJPraseuth Luangkhot makes it a priority to serve all his favorite meals at his Waialae Avenue eatery, JJ Bistro & French Pastry. He insists that his confidence in and resulting pride from the popular menu derived from Laotian and French tastes and presentation techniques, come from the eatery’s 13-plus years of serving quality confections gleaned from fresh ingredients.

  • For chef and owner JJ Luangkhot, presentation is just as important as taste.
  • The Escargot ($7.95), surrounded by vegetables and covered in a rich and creamy garlic sauce.
  • Laotian Rock'n Roll ($7.95) are traditional summer rolls with fresh lemongrass chicken and a light curry.
  • Baked Lobster Avocado ($7.95) is one of Luangkhot's most popular dishes off the appetizer menu.

“We began adding items one at a time, little by little,” Luangkhot says. “It’s a pretty good sign that you can see your market is expanding and accepts you. From pizza to pasta to a la carte (items), we just kept adding on and it went crazy!”

The talented owner and chef has expanded his restaurant to include more square footage while also supplying hotels and other restaurants with his popular desserts and pastries. One can clearly see the passion in JJ’s eyes as he talks about some of his most popular dishes, including the Baked Lobster Avocado ($7.95). The dish, which JJ insists is the most popular off the appetizer menu (he calls it the “No. 1 hit”), features rich lobster meat with the chef’s special sauce covered with mozzarella cheese atop pieces of JJ’s freshly baked French bread.

“It’s the dish that keeps us expanding every year,” says the owner with a smile.

The restauranteur also suggests the Laotian Rock ‘N Roll ($7.95), traditional summer rolls with fresh lemongrass chicken and a light curry served with a sweet dipping sauce. The Escargot ($7.95) offers a unique take on the classic French dish as the snails are surrounded by baby corn, zucchini, red bell peppers and covered in a rich and creamy garlic sauce and, of course, a hearty piece of French bread, which is perfect for soaking up any leftover sauce.

The appetizer menu alone serves as a prime example why so many customers say “oui oui” to JJ.
