Foodies, get your “eat” on at On On at McCully Chinese Restaurant. This family-owned establishment offers mouthwatering Cantonese cuisine, with a hint of Northern Chinese flair — all served fresh, family-style.
Owners Cowan and Faith Wong first opened the doors to On On in Kapahulu in 1980, before relocating to its current location 20 years later. Today, their son, Norman, serves as manager of On On at McCully and their daughter, Julia, offers her services there from time to time, while also managing Duck Yun Chinese Restaurant, another family eatery located in Aina Haina Shopping Center.
“We have more than 200 items on the menu at On On,” Norman says.
And with that, much credit is due to executive chef Min Hong Lee, who whips up a fabulous array of tasty dishes such as Chinese Chicken Salad ($9.95), Oyster Sauce Chicken Cake Noodle ($9.50) and Shrimp with Broccoli ($11.95).
“The Chinese Chicken Salad and Shrimp with Broccoli are healthier options on our menu and can be categorized as a lighter fare,” Norman states. “The noodles itself is more of a heartier meal.”
On On’s Chinese Chicken Salad is a refreshing blend of fresh lettuce, chicken and tomato, tossed with special Chinese spices and sesame seed oil, and topped with crispy won ton strips and chopped nuts.
Shrimp with Broccoli also has proven to be a favorite among the restaurant’s new and loyal customers. This simple dish features a generous amount of shrimp perfectly seasoned with garlic, salt and pepper, then stir-fried with broccoli, carrots and a savory dash of oyster sauce.
For many patrons, On On’s Oyster Sauce Chicken Cake Noodle is one of the best they’ve tried, and takes the cake when it comes to irresistible flavor.
“There’s a lot of chopped roasted chicken and a lot of cake noodle in this dish, mixed with choy sum,” says Norman, adding that the oyster sauce gravy completes the dish.
