Jihei and Tsuya Takayama founded Fukuya in 1939 and since then it’s continually proven to be a favorite among many when it comes to local Japanese cuisine.
“We’re a delicatessen and we also do a lot of catering for family parties, office parties and funerals,” says Arrison Iwahira, Fukuya president and great-grandson of the original founders.
Because Fukuya is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, Iwahira suggests customers come early for the best selection of tasty offerings.
“We have close to 40 items on our deli menu,” he explains. “Our top sellers continue to be our sushi, shrimp tempura, chicken and our fresh ahi. We get a lot of our fish from the fish auction, so it’s always fresh.
So, whether it’s Namasu, Shiso Musubi or Chow Fun tyou’re after, you’ll find it all at Fukuya on South King Street. And with a total of 13 dedicated employees on staff, everything is made fresh daily, presenting customers with only the best options available.
“Every okazuya has its unique selections that they’re known for, but I think for us it’s definitely the Nori Chicken ($2) and our specialty sushi rolls like the teri beef roll ($4.50), hot dog roll ($4.25) and chicken roll ($4.50),” Iwahira says. “A lot of people come for those items.”
It is Iwahira’s dream to keep the business in the family, and he’s well aware that success comes with a lot of dedication and hard work.
“I think the business has been able to sustain itself through long hours, consistent hard work and offering quality food to the community,” he says.
