Charlotte, first opened the business in 1951. Since then, the eatery has contin- ued to serve up ono local food.
Popular menu items include the Beef Stew ($9.75/side order; $13.75/pound; $14.75/plate) and Laulau ($7.50/pork or chicken side order; $9.75/beef side order; $11/butterfish side order; $17- $19.25/plate, depending on choice of protein).
“What sets our laulau apart is really the time we take cooking the laulau,” Young notes. “It’s (cooked) low and slow, four and a half hours, so the leaves come out nice and tender, and juicy.”
The laulau offerings are made with taro and ti leaves from local farmers. Each laulau is wrapped with a desired protein and then weighed out to 1 pound prior to being cooked. Pork Laulau is available daily, Chicken Lau- lau on Mondays and Thursdays, Butterfish Laulau on Tuesdays and Fridays, and Beef Laulau on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The restaurant’s beef stew consists of beef short rib, which is marinated for at least one to two hours, carrots, potatoes, celery, onion and tomato paste. Young shares that the stew’s rich flavors and tender meat make it a customer favorite.
Young’s Fish Market also offers cater- ing, free delivery on orders over a certain amount and Laulau Care Packages that can be shipped to the mainland.
