Enjoy a harmonious ‘Union’ of great dishes, drinks

Meatball Marinara ($11)

Bethel Union in downtown Honolulu offers a winning combination of classic Italian cuisine and wonderful wines — including the services of an in-house sommelier.

Local chef Joel Alerta skillfully handles creation of the delicious dishes on the menu. Bethel Union is also run by the same team that oversees J. Dolan’s, the award-winning pizzeria.

Bethel Union boasts a creative and exciting Happy Hour menu from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. In addition to the appetizing food choices, Bethel Union’s Happy Hour also features $6 house wines, $6 select seasonal beers, $8 specialty cocktails and $6 well drinks.

One popular dish on the Happy Hour menu is the Citrus Garlic Shrimp Skewers ($7). These juicy skewered shrimp are bathed in a blend of herb, lemon and garlic marinade, with a savory citrus glaze.

You can also see your way over to another Happy Hour seafood dish — Clams Italiano (market price). The delicious clams are steamed in white wine, garlic and herbs, and served with garlic toast.

Meanwhile, meat lovers can rejoice, too. For example, the Happy Hour menu includes the Meatball Marinara ($11). It consists of hand-made meatballs, which are covered an oven-roasted tomato sauce, and served with crostini.

Besides its Happy Hour Menu, Bethel Union also serves refreshing salads, small plates, pasta, large plates, and hot sandwiches. The sandwiches, such as Italian Chicken Club and more, are served during lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Among its amenities, the restaurant features a comfortable main dining room, and an outdoor lanai patio. The lanai serves as a charming place for guests — perfect for cocktail receptions and other pau hana get-togethers.

Currently, Bethel Union is open Monday through Saturday, but the management has plans to add Sunday hours in the near future.

One of the flavorful items on Bethel Union’s Happy Hour menu from 3 to 6 p.m. is Mussels Fra Diavolo ($13). This appetizing dish consists of white wine steamed black mussels, oven-roasted tomato sauce and zesty red chili pepper, accompanied with crostini.
