A new restaurant is in town — The Surfing Pig. And with a divine menu and its hip, urban atmosphere, foodies and area residents will no doubt have a new go-to spot.

Though the eatery, located on 3605 Waialae Ave., is not yet open to the public (it will be by the end of the month), a sneak peak of what’s to come is all it took to win over the Dining Out team.

Some menu items customers can expect to find at The Surfing Pig are Smokey Cheesy Mac with Porchetta, Street Tacos, SP Burger and Kampachi Carpaccio. In addition to its food offerings, the restaurant also will serve handcrafted cocktails.

“(We aim to offer) local, urban, hip cuisine,” said owner Stan Glander. “So we are going to take a little bit of the flavors of Hawaii, toss in a little cool with it, and come up with some good stuff.”

Glander, who also is the mastermind behind the beloved Kono’s restaurants, hopes The Surfing Pig will bring the community “extra aloha” and help the Kaimuki-Waialae area to “become the mecca of dining again.”

Yin to the Yang

A heavenly medley of yellow squash, zucchini and carrots that are lightly sauteed and seasoned with sesame oil, pepper, salt and a dash of soy sauce brings balance to the dish.

Soak It All In

The St. Louis-style ribs are marinated in a brown sugar-based rub overnight — which translates to mouthwatering flavors.

Hot Off the Grill

The ribs are steamed in brown ale and red wine vinegar, and then cooked to perfection on the grill.

Finishing Touch

A “secret” blend of herbs and bits of chicharron are sprinkled on the mound of ribs, adding an extra layer of flavor and texture.
