Buckwheat Fig Bread ($5.99, Sunday special)

There are few things that compare to the delicious aroma of freshly baked bread. The scene — and scent — at Manoa Marketplace’s Fendu Boulangerie is filled with this very satisfaction, as baked goods, including a long list of loaves, are pulled fresh from the oven daily.

This boulangerie, or bakery, is open for indulging, and with display cases stocked with sweet treats and a chalkboard covered with breakfast specials, gourmet pizzas and delectable sandwiches, every visit is a new, sinfully delicious experience. (Of course, there are healthful items too.)

One standout menu item too good to feel guilty about is Fendu Breakfast Panini ($7.99). It includes French sandwich bread slathered in house-made basil-and-macadamia-nut pesto, prosciutto di Parma ham, sautAi??ed eggs, shallots and fresh mozzarella. Breakfast goodies like this one are available everyday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Fendu, which is run by master baker and chef Niel Koep, also offers daily bread specials. These fresh selections range from Sundried Tomato Cheese Bread on Wednesday to Hamakua Farms Mushroom Bread on Saturday to Buckwheat Fig Bread on Sunday — just to name a few!

A TREAT FOR THE END OF THE WEEK

On Sunday only, Fendu Boulangerie bakes up a batch of Buckwheat Fig Bread ($5.99), which is available from 9:30 a.m. until the loaves are sold out. This doughy delight is made from a blending of wheat, whole-wheat and buckwheat flour and chopped, dried black figs, which offer a perfect touch of sweetness and luxury to each loaf. “It’s a very thin crust with a nice moistness,” chef and owner Niel Koep explains.
