With 95 percent of its products imported from Japan, J-Shop is the perfect place for anyone craving authentic Japanese flavors.

The Makiki grocery store houses many high-quality ingredients and food items you can’t get anywhere else on Oahu. As soon as you walk into the Young Street store, the best in Japanese goodies can be found in every aisle, such as the tastiest meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables and more.

Products are shipped to the shop two to three times a week, and locals and visitors alike have been known to frequent the shop.

In addition to the sought-after imported items in the store, J-Shop also features an eatery conveniently located inside that offers made-to-order bentos for hungry patrons.

“The freshness is really good,” says manager Takakazu Maeda.

SURF AND TURF

Right now, customers can sink their teeth into a bowl full of savory flavors. The Teriyaki Chicken/Unagi Combo Donburi ($9) features a generous serving of teriyaki chicken and unagi (fresh water eel) to satisfy your appetite. The dish is lightly seasoned with the sweet magic of teriyaki and unagi sauces, and the protein-packed donburi is served with shredded egg, nori and white rice, along with a small side of tsukemono. With delicious delights like this, it’s not hard to see — and taste — why J-Shop keeps freshness as its top priority.
