Summer is just around the corner, and with it comes the pressure to squeeze ourselves back into our swimsuits. Lucky for us, Kenny’s Restaurant, located in Kalihi’s Kamehameha Shopping Center, is helping us prepare for those sizzling summer days in delicious style.

“In April, we streamlined our menu, lowering prices pretty much across the board — most by 30 percent,” explains Kenny’s president and owner John Fujieki Jr. (the eatery already has in place impressive early bird and senior menu discounts). Part of that simplification process was placing more of a focus on providing health-conscious items for the eatery’s clientele, especially its patrons dealing with diabetes. “We have a lot of people with diabetes in Hawaii that come to our restaurant,” Fujieki explains, which is why Kenny’s offers a number of sugar-free and sugarless options on its menu.

One such selection, Kenny’s Famous Chinese Chicken Salad ($11.49), showcases Shoyu chicken, char siu, wanton chips, Chinese parsley and peanuts on a bed of crisp lettuce. What makes this dish so special is its signature sesame seed dressing (offered as a sugar-free version; just let your server know when ordering).

Another sugar conscious choice is Ahi Belly ($18.95), featuring generous portions of healthy tofu and succulent ahi. As an included side, Fujieki recommends the brown rice, as it is a great nutrient-rich choice with robust flavor and satisfying fiber. For those seeking the sugarless option with this selection, let the server know, and the dish will be served with a signature Japanese soy sauce that the restaurant has incorporated as a low-sugar swap.

Turkey Avocado Sandwich ($10.89) offers a healthy spin on Kenny’s classic version made with bacon (just let your server know you’d rather have your bite without the pork). So delicious, topped with mayo, sprouts, lettuce and tomato, and served with a pickle and your choice of side, you’ll forget it could ever be made any other way.

The next time you are hungry for a great meal, head on over to Kenny’s in Kalihi, an eatery offering tons of sweet deals, sans the sugar.
