Food trucks have become the ultimate “hipster” venue. On Oahu, we all know of the shrimp trucks on the North Shore, but where are all the good food trucks in town? That’s where Five Star Shrimp comes in, bringing shrimp and so much more. And the best part is, Five Star Shrimp has an established location on Kapahulu — all served out of an iconic blue and white truck.

“Food trucks are very different compared to restaurants,” says chef Jeremy Gante, who’s owned and worked at a variety of restaurants before joining the Five Star Shrimp team. “You get a lot more customers in a day, so you have to get the food out fast. You also have more freedom with the menu, and you have the opportunity to communicate with your customers, which is fun for everyone.”

Served plate-lunch style, patrons get their entree with a side of rice and/or salad and a pineapple wedge sprinkled with li hing mui. Enjoy Gante’s house-made Loco Moco ($8.95) — his personal favorite — with a freshly prepared hamburger patty completed with the perfectly salty, buttery and meaty gravy locals know and love.

“Making the gravy takes initiative and diligence,” explains Gante. “You’ve got to plan it out and know what you’re doing to make it taste good and get the consistency right.”

Dig into the Steak and Shrimp Combo ($12.95), served with large peel-as-you-eat shrimp in a lemon, butter and garlic sauce, and thinly sliced steak seasoned with rosemary, parsley and onions. If you missed the most important meal of the day, Five Star Shrimp has got you covered with breakfast served all day. Chow down on the Veggie Omelette ($8.95), cooked with spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, bell peppers and topped with Sriracha.

“Five Star Shrimp plans to be one of the most successful food trucks on the island, especially within our community,” says Gante. “Our location has a lot to do with what we serve. It’s both local and tourist-y, with more than just shrimp. It’s local food with a fine-dining twist. Five-star food not at a five-star price.”

To celebrate Five Star Shrimp’s grand opening, take advantage of its 99-cent pancake special. Also, keep an eye out for new and exciting menu items, such as Gante’s exclusive Ahi Carpaccio.
