A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS WEEK’S HOUSE SPECIAL: Tofu Homestyle ($9.50 regular price, $6.95 special price available through April 11)

Situated on the bottom floor of Safeway on South Beretania Street, Asian Mix offers a wide variety of Asian and local fare to diners, including Japanese-style bentos and ramen, Chinese-style roasted meats and Taiwanese-influenced milk teas. Yes, the eatery even dons an “Asian Mix: Tea Time” station, serving favorites such as Honey Lemon tea ($3.50, 24 ounces), which is customizable with or without add-ons like tapioca pearls or coffee jelly. Patrons rave about Asian Mix’s drink concoctions and cuisine, which always is affordable and enough to share. The restaurant introduces Tofu Homestyle, a dish that will run at a special price now through April 11.

Soft tofu is cut and lightly fried in oil until browned, to ensure a crisp exterior, and to keep the curds of soy from breaking apart.

Ground pork is fried in a sizzling hot wok with soy sauce, garlic, sambal, oyster sauce and chicken stock, before the browned tofu is thrown into the “mix.”

The ingredients fuse to create a balanced sauce, complementing the pork and tofu, which is “perfect (when served) over hot, steamed rice,” says Asian Mix owner Daniel Leung.

For a pop of taste and color, diced red bell peppers and green onions are sprinkled on top.

The dish always is prepared at a moderate spice level, Leung reassures. However, it can be prepared mild or extra spicy upon request.
