I love a good barbecue and everything about it — the flavors, the textures, the ability to just dig in without caring about the sauce getting on my hands and face — I mean really, is there any other way to enjoy a barbecued feast?

So, it’s definitely a treat to discover Kau Kau Grill, a food truck on Kapiolani Boulevard that consistently serves up delectable eats.

Co-owner Miles Oyasato says, “Patrons shouldn’t expect typical food truck food. Instead they’ll get some quality food out of a truck. We’re like a specialty truck.”

Popular among Kau Kau Grill fanatics is the famed Barbecue Baby Back Ribs ($12). More than just your usual barbecue fare, these ribs are slow-cooked before they’re placed on the grill, creating sumptuous bites of meat that easily break away from the bone. And the homemade barbecue sauce provides mouthwatering sweet and tangy flavors that will leave you wanting more with each bite.

For something a little more surf than turf, Kau Kau Grill has two flavorful options to choose from.

First there’s “Ono” Poke Bowl ($8) made with fresh fish received from the auction daily. The fish is marinated in a homemade, spicy concoction comprised of a mayo blend. Customers may choose to have the poke served atop a bowl of rice, or purchase it as a plate lunch combined with other items on the menu. Those looking to bring a pupu to a party, or just want to bring some home to enjoy for the next few days also may purchase the poke by the pound.

Secondly, Garlic Shrimp ($12) features nine pieces of shrimp cooked to perfection in a garlic and olive oil blend. Like all plates at Kau Kau Grill, it’s also accompanied with a choice of white or brown rice and salad or potato mac salad.

Next up, Kau Kau Grill will once again participate in this month’s Eat the Street April 25 in Kakaako.

Oyasato says Kau Kau Grill will move from its current locale at the end of the month. Fans of the gourmet food truck can keep track of its new whereabouts via Facebook or Instagram (@kaukaugrill).
