THIS WEEK’S HOUSE SPECIAL: SINGAPORE NOODLE ($8.75)

Fairwood Drive Inn & Pho 27 Vietnamese Cuisine in Kaimuki Shopping Center presents food-natics with Chineseand local-style favorites at the front of the house (known as Fairwood Drive Inn), which features a fast-food, takeout concept. Then, as you make your way toward the back of the establishment, you’ll come across a family-friendly dining room (Pho 27 Vietnamese Cuisine), where authentic Vietnamese fare is cooked to perfection.

Owner Tiffany Ko shares with Dining Out a Fairwood Drive Inn bestseller, Singapore Noodle, that will have you slurping up a storm.

Don’t let the name fool you. According to Ko, Singapore Noodle is, in fact, a Chinese dish of chow mein, but she says that it’s the addition of curry powder that classifies it as “Singapore Noodle.”

Yellow curry powder is infused into the noodles to heat things up a notch. Care to spice it up even more? Ask Ko and her staff, and they’ll add chili pepper into the equation.

Thin Chinese rice noodles are boiled and then stir-fried with a flavorful medley of char siu, shrimp, egg, green onions and bean sprouts.

Ko is originally from Canton, China, and moved to Hawaii in 1988. She inherited a love for cooking from her father, who was a chef in China.

“This is a daily top-seller for us,” Ko shares. “I don’t know of many restaurants that offer this. It’s a nice alternative for your usual Chinese noodles.”
