If you’ve been to Good to Grill in Kapahulu, you’re quite aware that it’s pretty much all about the meat — or it was.

It’s time to take another look, veggie lovers.

Pat Comer, director of restaurant operations there, has had an idea simmering on the back burner of his mind for a while, and a visit by Dining Out was just the incentive he needed.

“I’m looking to add a vegetarian dish,” he reveals. “I would like to open up that niche.”

Talk about perfect timing. So, without further ado, making its debut today at Good to Grill is Kiawe Grilled Quinoa Burger ($9.99) — and you read it first right here in Dining Out.

The innovative burger — a mix of quinoa, oats, mushrooms, black beans, onions, roasted red bell peppers, cilantro and ground cumin with a hint of jalapeno — is served on a fresh ciabatta roll with sweet potato spread, sliced avocado, sliced red onions and alfalfa sprouts. It comes with your choice of sides: a fresh green salad (which includes mixed greens, diced tomatoes and shredded carrots served with balsamic vinaigrette), brown and white rice, or fries.

Comer hasn’t forgotten vegans. Diners also can request the quinoa burger served atop a green salad instead of the ciabatta roll (ciabatta dough often contains milk), which, he says, makes the dish completely vegan.

Either way, this is one healthy plateful — in size and nutrition.

Quinoa actually is a protein-rich seed, not a grain. “If you put the protein from the quinoa with the vitamins from the vegetables, it’s an all-encompassing dish,” explains Comer, who notes that about 99 percent of the produce served at the restaurant is locally grown.

Life is good.
