The menu at Violets Grill is as simple and down to earth as the people who have made this restaurant a Kalihi staple for 60 years. Whether it’s the popular oxtail soup, saimin, big egg breakfasts, miso soup, garlic ahi or mochiko chicken, everything is unpretentious and fittingly represents the generations of diners who keep the business thriving.

Violets serves local food for local diners who appreciate its version of Japanese and Okinawan dishes. I have it from a reliable source that the Okinawan Soba is delicious! The appetizers are no different.

The Potato/Mac Salad ($6) is simply prepared with common ingredients, just the way customers like it.

Ahi Katsu ($10) begins with fresh ahi that is dredged in panko and katsu coating, then quickly fried until golden brown and served with tonkatsu sauce. It’s as simple and tasty as the Chicken Katsu ($10), which is prepared in the same manner.

Looking for more fish appetizer options? The Ahi Belly ($12) just might do the trick. It’s salted, peppered and grilled until flaky. That’s it. Easy and simple food is good food. That’s exactly what Violets has done for six decades.
