Since the 1960s, Shiro’s Saimin Haven has been the No. 1 pick among diners when it comes to classic comfort food such as saimin, sandwiches and more. And with close to 200 local delights on the menu, you’ll never tire of Shiro’s delicious fare.

“Saimin is what we’re known for, in fact, we have 65 different saimin options to choose from,” says manager Bryce Fujimoto. “The saimin noodles are made from scratch at our noodle factory on Dillingham Boulevard and our broth is a secret recipe — but we can tell you that it’s very clean and made with a kelp base. We don’t use chicken or pork,” he adds.

And while all Shiro’s saimin favorites are worth a try, seafood aficionados will love Oyster Saimin ($9.35), a newer addition to the menu.

“We decided to add it to the menu because I like to feature things that I like to eat, and oysters are one of my favorite foods,” Fujimoto says. “I thought we needed more seafood on the menu as well, so it’s a good addition to our large saimin selection.”

Oyster saimin features a heaping bowl of saimin swimming in your choice of original broth or hot and spicy broth (for an additional cost) with three oysters, lightly breaded in panko and deep-fried. Wun tun also accompanies the dish, as well as a medley of vegetables and garnishes, including Chinese cabbage, green onion, luncheon meat, char siu and sliced egg.

“People seem to really enjoy this saimin, but when it comes to a Shiro’s classic that would definitely have to be Beeg Shiro ($7.25),” Fujimoto states.

Now, believe it or not, saimin is not a part of this restaurant original, instead Fujimoto describes Beeg Shiro as a triple-decker sandwich. Hope you’re hungry!

“Beeg Shiro is served with three buns, slices of teri beef, char siu, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato, and a side of fries. Throughout the years it’s still maintained its popularity.”

Shiro’s Saimin Haven is located in Ewa Beach, Waimalu and Waipahu. Planning a party or just in the mood for some tasty saimin? Shiro’s and its friendly staff can cater to all your needs, as personalized catering also is available.
