Hail to the New King of Shabu Shabu

A delicious surprise has recently popped up in Moiliili. Shabu Shabu King, which opened just about three months ago, is a refreshingly new restaurant that reinvigo-rates shabu shabu.

At Shabu Shabu King, guests start by choosing a broth, as they offer 15 different types including kim chee, miso, healthy herb, spicy, vegetable and more. You can taste the robust benefits of the Healthy Herb broth. Goji berry, red date, green and white onion, ginseng and longan combine and simmer nicely for a warm, nutritious base. Cost of select broths vary from $5.95 to $10.95, and you may select two different broths for one meal.

Next is the fun process of choosing which types of vegetables or meats you would like to bubble in your broth. Shabu Shabu King offers more than 100 side dishes, and you will notice that each plate is color-coded with the price. Just a few of the choices available are pork, beef, beef tongue, lamb and chicken.

“Meat is very popular — the beef mostly — it is our No. 1 seller so far. Some customers will go for the beef tongue too,” says owner Michael Shi, who has worked in various shabu shabu-style restaurants in New York and Miami. The eatery also offers lobster, squid, crab, udon, noodles, choi, sum, rice cake, corn, sprouts and ong choi, to name a few.

For a limited time, guests may enjoy a free appetizer and dessert when ordering a Shabu Shabu dinner. A student special also includes 75-cent drinks with proper I.D.
