What constitutes the perfect first meal of the day varies from person to person, country to country. In the U.S., for example, we love our omelettes, pancakes and toast. Elsewhere, fresh pastries and aromatic coffees are known as the essence of many European breakfasts, while combinations of tortilla, eggs and rice are the preference at many South American tables. And nothing starts the day off right among the Thai better than fried rice with egg.

Here at home, Tanaka Saimin has your best breakfast interests at heart. This summer, the restaurant has been offering Tanaka’s Japanese Breakfast ($7.25), a traditional meal that consists of your choice of miso butterfish, salmon or saba fish, one scrambled egg, and a scoop of white rice with furikake. Accompanying the meal is steaming miso soup and green tea.

“I do eat this myself, and to be able to have the miso soup with the fish and rice is my favorite part. I think it is the best part,” says general manager Nani Lee Christian.
