Owned and operated by Henry Liu, New Liu’s Chop Suey remains a staple when it comes to top-notch Cantonese-style cuisine in Kalihi. Located in Kamehameha Shopping Center on North School Street, the Chinese restaurant presents customers with appealing family-style entrees in a casual atmosphere.
“I opened the restaurant in 2002 and customers love the food here, especially my Salt and Pepper Pork Chop on Rice ($4.75, $7.95 full order),” Liu says. “I was taught this recipe by one of my mentors, but I’ve added my own twist to it, and it has become one of our signature dishes.”
The pork chops are marinated with a slew of ingredients, including Chinese five spice, garlic, pepper and salt, then fried to perfection and lastly, garnished with red chili pepper, Chinese parsley, slivers of garlic and a dash of white wine.
“Once you smell the aroma of the pork chops, I promise you you’ll become very hungry,” says Liu with a smile. “We also have more than 30 popular dishes that we serve day and night for less than $5, and everything is made to order.”
Liu also recommends that dining enthusiasts try his Minute Chicken Cake Noodle ($4.75) and Stuffed Eggplant on Rice ($4.75), made from a Forbidden City recipe.
“We’ve been very busy. The location is perfect, our prices are reasonable and people can book parties here as well,” Liu explains. “We also do catering and fill a lot of take-out orders. About 85 percent of our business can be credited to take-out orders.”
